Trade-off mitigation: a key concept to understand the evolution and function of convergent floral phenotypes

In this talk, we explore how floral phenotypic convergence evolves and functions from the perspective of 'trade-off mitigation',—a hypothesis suggesting that flowers can adapt to diverse pollinators simultaneously by evolutionarily mitigating trade-offs.

Kawaguchi, L. G., K. Ohashi, A. Konuma, and Y. Toquenaga (2026) Bandwagon effects in a floral market: early pollinator acquisition offsets colour disadvantages in less attractive flowers. Functional Ecology.

Some flowers aren't the flashiest, but they can still get a crowd. Our study shows less colourful flowers can attract as many pollinators as bright ones by getting early visitors—a floral "bandwagon effect" like a popular restaurant drawing the next wave of customers.
